The Foundry- The Wedding of Madeline and Steve

I fell hard for the Foundry. From the rooftop view of the 59th street Bridge, to the ivy covered brick walls and the balcony view of the dance floor.

Madeline and Steve were incredibly kind and thoughtful- and completely easy. They were there to have a blast and that they did. The Bridesmaids and Groomsmen were a terrific, fun group…and I had a fantastic time with all of them.

Liberty state park, Jersey City, with Irma and Chris

Liberty state park in Jersey City overlooks the downtown Manhattan skyline. It is a gorgeous place, the Statue of Liberty stands tall to the far right , while the Empire State building looks small next to the new Freedom Tower.

Chris and Irma and I had planned a spring engagement shoot. Our winter sessions were delayed and we were hoping for daffodils and a warm breeze.

What we received from dear Mother Nature was a bitter cold and extremely windy afternoon. The wind was blowing off the Hudson River and was bone chilling. Never the less, Irma was a willing and lovely lady-freezing, hair blown and still sweet and beautiful. And Chris a handsome, light hearted model. The 911 memorial provided some relief from the wind, but we just had to have that skyine.

I love the wind blown images. they are as warm as the day was cold.

The Basilica, Hudson, NY

A Basilica wedding, Hudson, New York.
Lauren and Ryan understand design and Ryan is a architect.I think the actual structure of Basilica is what initially attracted them to have the wedding here. In fact, they used this drawing on the front of their save the date cards. The back was a black and white photograph.
back.jpg

Basilica offers a rustic backdrop, industrial yet beautiful.  A short walk and you are at the river side, with the mighty Hudson framed in the background. Distant trains and ships  are in view. We stopped on the railroad tracks to savor the last of the days' light.
Lauren got dressed with her maids at the William Farmer and Sons hotel. The men were is a apartment just down the road from the ladies. Each space was furnished comfortably and offered easy  walking distance to Basilica, a nice perk for everyone on such a beautiful day.
During the ceremony each guest was given a copper cup.(Copper was a element used through the wedding) This became their own beverage cup and a toast was had after rings were exchanged. I thought it was such a unique and personal way to honor the guests while celebrating each other. And it became a gift to take home.
Planning was by Hudson Valley Ceremonies. The interior was lit in a blue and purple glow, and carnival lights strung across the 50 foot ceilings to add warmth.
Between the fabulous bride, her handsome groom, and wonderful friends and family, this wedding was stellar on all counts

Carolyn and Joel at The Garrison

Carolyn and Joel are delightful together and apart. They compliment each other in the best ways.

Carolyn got dressed at the Garrison, while Joel was at a nearby hotel.

The first look took place under the shade trees to keep everyone cool. We made our way down hill to the big view later for a few group photos and to capture the scenery. This is where we used the drone for a brief time. I love drone images but never want the distraction during the ceremony. (They can be pretty noisy). Family photos were taken in front of the iconic stone gazebo. As the afternoon grew late the light became soft and lovely.

As the time for the ceremony approached, the day  was so   beautiful, clear and blue .As Carolyn walked down the aisle to meet Joel, everything was perfect. The Flowers adorning the wooden "Huppa" were stunning. I could here the guests whispering that the view was amazing, and then when Carolyn  was midway down the aisle the crowd was awed by how beautiful she looked. Radiant might be a cliche but true.

The Garrison {Caitlyn and Nick}

I have known Nick and his family for more then 20 years, most of Nick's life, first as a photographer and then as a friendThe first time I photographed Nick I think he was three, and his sister younger sister not yet born. She can be seen here, a dark haired beauty singing to her brother at the reception.

I adore the Canevari family, for their warmth,  and goodness. And it does not hurt that they are all drop dead gorgeous, inside and out.

Caitlyn is the piece that just fit.a sweet, smart, beautiful young woman, a perfect match for Nick

The wedding was at one of my favorite venues, The Garrison. It has views to die for, sunsets that are unmatched, great culinary fair and a wonderful staff.I took advantage of the sunset and followed it later with a timeless, long exposure, including the big dipper and view of the surrounding mountains .I love the great visual finale of a big starry night shot.

Take a look at the magic we made together

here is what Nick's sweet Dad wrote to me

Hi Cynthia.

I just wanted to send you a quick missive to give you a heartfelt "thank you" for the exceptional work you did on Sat, and previously.

I've been to so many weddings over the years, and have witnessed numerous photographers at those. To this day, I have yet to see anyone who equals you - your absolute phenomenal work ethic, your unique ability to engage the wedding party and family, your care and attention to detail, your team and the teamwork, and ultimately the beautiful work. You perform an orchestration which is perfect, and I want you to know how much we appreciate you - both as an artist and as a long-time friend to this family.

We love you!

The Barns at Liberty Farm Ghent NY ( Alex and Victoria)

Alex and Victoria came to me by route of Alex's sister's wedding, 7 years ago. This wedding was to be very different then that Brooklyn Botanical Garden winter affair.

This wedding took place on a farm, Liberty Farm, with horses and a glorious barn, with decorated horse paddocks, filled with antique furniture. This wedding had a sunset to die for, a sweet view and farm fences.

Victoria wore a lovely easy to be in, lace gown and adorned her hair with a delicate flower wreath. Alex, hipster from Brooklyn, wore a elegant slim fitting blue suit, white and blue patterned shirt, blue tie and fabulous brown leather shoes.

CHeck out the sunset-amazing only begins to describe it. I shot this with a movie light to keep the warmth of the setting sun and not introduce the blue light of a flash. I also went for the very blue light of dusk, immediately following the colorful sunsetting sky.

the barn was trickey, honey warm in color and we did create quite a few black and white images, lit carefully with movie lighting to create a 50's look, akin to the furnishings and design of the evening

Making Your Photography Experience Fun, Easy and Comfortable

There are so many photographers you may choose from.  We come from many difference walks of life from Urban hipster to a quiet country shooter. So many options, so many different prices.

I have learned as an experienced shooter that to capture  the intimate moments we desperately want to document, a couple needs to feel safe in our presence.

At our first shoot, usually an engagement session, I take time to get to know my "subjects"

I know how difficult it can be to be in front of  a lens, waiting for that awful click when you just. know you made a bad face. I know how self conscious it feels to stand still for what seems like a eternity. I know how bad  we can feel when we see a less then flattering images of ourselves.

The one constant comment I hear always is" That was so much fun"  and "I love these, how did you make us laugh so hard?" "I actually love these and I hate all pictures of myself"

I think it is the ability to listen and really be present with you. I want to hear your story, and be more then some hired hand, but a photographer that actually blends into the wedding without standing out or being in the way. After initial prep shots, everyone stops posing and let's me be as a fly on the wall-there but unnoticed, unless I am helping dry a bouquet or smooth a dress.

Here a few moments that I was lucky enough to be able to witness, without anyone feeling as though they had to hide the emotions from me or my camera.

The Beginning Happens with a Proposal

As a photographer, one of the greatest joys is to be there when one lover proposes marriage to another. I love the intimacy, and I have mastered hiding until the moment

From a rooftop in NYC, strewn with rose petals, to a Christmas tree farm, to Poets walk with a majestic view of the Hudson, or a gorgeous estate in December with a crunching snowy carpet.I have hidden successfully capturing that one moment in your lives. Often, shortly following the couple sharing kisses and excitement, I come out of hiding and we have a quick, impromptu photo shoot. The images are always so emotional and a wonderful memory.

I am here to document this once in a lifetime moment. The beginning of two lives joining together to form a family. The beginning a an adventure like none other

Natalie and John are married at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club

Two years ago around Christmas, Joh contacted me to photograph his surprise proposal to Natalie. I was very excited and waited at a Christmas tree farm, Ninja Photographer, behind a fat xmas tree for him to  say the magic words. As I watched him walking along, acting as though he was choosing a tree, he suddenly disappeared behind one, far  far away from me. a moment later I heard Natalie's voice echoing across the valley..."OH MY GOD"

I raced down, waited a minute or two to be invited into this intimate moment and captured the most amazing moment between two people so very much in love.Natalie could not stop crying. so sweet and touching.I was carried away with emotion, trying to remain a objective photographer

We revisited the scene of the crime a year later for a casual engagement shoot, while the two really did shop for a tree.

I was beyond pleased when Natalie asked if I would photograph the wedding. Of course I said YES

here are a few of the many many images from the amazing, vibrant, joyous day

A Tribeca Affair

Katie wanted a Non wedding wedding. A party without too many bells and whistles, but a party shared with dearest friends and family. She and Alan picked mark Forgione Restaurant in Tribeca, for both its warm ambiance, dark brick and woods, as well as its amazing food.

Family stayed nearby at the Hotel Conrad, a huge new building that was able to accommodate everyone in one place.

The couple looked completely stunning, Katie in a silk satin retro styled gown. Being a fashion stylist in NYC, she has the best esthetic, unmatched fashion flair. Alan had a custom made dinner jacket in silver blue. He was one handsome dude, dressed in tuxedo pants with that stunning coat.

The restaurant was adorned simply, candles, lovely flowers, family photos. It needed so very little.

The only time of the day where I was noticeable was actually as we did the portraits on the streets of Tribeca. Family joined us in front of what was once a warehouse building and now High end lofts. It still had that urban feel that Katie and Alan were looking for.

The DJ for the reception was much more of a club DJ and really had the party rocking. I was so impressed with the flow of the music. He had the best timing.

Tribeca will never be the same after this crowd descended upon the street and made their way across the street to the local bar for a wild funny after party.

A New Baby is coming {Kristen and Jason are expecting}

Today was the most perfect spring day in memory. The leaves are the yellow  green just before bursting into full leaf. The grass suddenly blinding bright green and the sky, without a cloud and deepest blue.

Montgomery Place is a lovely spot even on a grey today, but today it was sublime.

Kristen and Jason met me for  a maternity, baby bump, prego shoot. Call it what you will, it was wonderful photographing this really sweet couple as they await the birth of their first baby.In a couples married life this can be one, if not the one, most wonderful time in life. Heralding in all the expectation, the joy,  the responsibility of a growing  commitment called family.

I loved taking these photos today...it was magical, funny and touching
